Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
Relief of mild to moderate pain associated w/ headache, toothache, primary dysmenorrhea including pain due to trauma, muscle & after surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >14 yr Initially 500 mg, followed by 250 mg every 6 hr as needed.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ ulceration or chronic inflammation in upper or lower GIT; aspirin experienced bronchospasm, allergic rhinitis & urticaria. Severe renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use in case of hypersensitivity, diarrhoea & vomiting. Treatment duration of >1 wk. Patients w/ GIT disturbances & asthma. Increased risk of serious CV thrombotic events, MI & stroke; GI adverse events including inflammation, bleeding, ulceration & perforation. Peri-op pain associated w/ CABG surgery. Increased risk of GI events w/ ASA. Patients w/ HTN; fluid retention or heart failure; prior history of ulcer disease or GI bleeding. Closely monitor BP during initiation & throughout the course of therapy. Discontinue use & initiate additional evaluation & treatment if serious GI adverse event is suspected. Pregnant women. Not recommended in childn <14 yr. Elderly or debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, diarrhoea; urticaria, facial oedema; headache, blurred vision, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia; dysuria, hematuria; sweating, ear pain.
Drug Interactions
Prolonged prothrombin time w/ anticoagulants. May result in false +ve reaction to urinary bile test.
